Edible Campus Program's "UCSB Gets Growing" is a workshop series dedicated to teaching people about the practice of gardening in order to improve their sense of agency in their food systems, increase their access to fresh, healthy, culturally-significant food, and foster connections between people and the land that nourishes them. In this mini-series, we aim to relate information about using materials usually considered as waste and repurposing them for food production. Workshop topics include upcycling containers from materials around the household, composting at home, and growing food from scraps that are usually discarded. This series will meet weekly on Fridays at 1pm. The series will be held over a 3 week timespan, beginning on August 6th and concluding on August 20th. To learn more and sign up for participation, please visit the link below! June 2021 - Welcome Katie Caracciolo,
New Edible Campus Garden Coordinator!! As a lifelong Californian and a longtime visitor, and now resident, of Goleta and Santa Barbara, I am thrilled to be a part of the FSH garden team. My love for gardening began when I was growing up in the Bay Area, raising roses, lavender, lemons, and tomatoes with my parents in our backyard. Some of my most cherished memories are from my time spent as a camper and staff member at a summer camp on Clear Lake, an experience that encouraged me to seek physical, outdoor work as I moved forward in my life. Now, as a History and Film and Media Studies double major, I find time spent in nature inspiring and relaxing, as well as a great way to get away from my desk and experience what the world has to offer. I am excited to collaborate on exciting activities in the FSH gardens with the rest of the community, and I can’t wait to see you all out in the gardens! What is an Olla?
How to Use Olla Irrigation to Water Efficiently An Olla is large bulging widemouthed earthenware vessel sometimes with looped handles used (as by Pueblo Indians) for storage, cooking, or as a container for water. WHAT TO PLANT Vegetables: You can still plant beans (for drying) and corn; also tomatoes (especially dwarf varieties), eggplant, peppers, chard, cucumbers, green onions, kale, summer & winter squash. Tip: Transplant in the late afternoon or early evening, water well and mulch around plants. Provide temporary shade as needed from the harsh midday son. Late July into August, sow seeds of carrots and cole crops (broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower). Keep soil moist and shaded until seedlings emerge; gradually increase sun exposure over a week. WATER Pay special attention to shallow-rooted plants that can wilt and dry out quickly during our hot, dry summers. Tip: Dig soil with a trowel; water on the first day the soil crumbles when you try to squeeze it into a ball. Deep water to force roots downward where more moisture is available. Hose off foliage during early morning hours to remove fungus spores such as powdery mildew. If using overhead irrigation, do so early enough in the day so that foliage can dry out completely before sunset. Weed Abatement in Both Gardens!

Nov 2020 - Welcome Rebecca Kovacs!
My experience in the garden goes way back to my childhood days. My dad managed apartments and also worked in pest control and I would help him with hard work and going on home depot runs almost every week. I worked at Lowes for 3 years as an outdoor power equipment sales specialist and worked in the indoor and outdoor garden departments. My specialty was in outdoor power equipment and providing customers with garden-related questions with pesticides, fungicides, fertilizers, plant characteristics, just to name a few. Being in these departments also got me involved with seasonal décor with planning displays and setups for the store creating welcoming environments. I enjoy hard work for physical activity, and I enjoy community work for involvement. I’m so excited to be a part of this team and am looking forward to contributing and creating new and fun things for everyone! Nov 2020 - Welcome Kevin Varga!
Hi everyone! I am pumped to do everything I can to improve our community gardens. Please feel free to contact me about any ideas/questions/concerns. My love of gardening began in my parents backyard in Southwest Pennsylvania. They have always had a lush garden, apple trees, raspberry bushes, and compost area. I also grew up as a Boy Scout and learned to thrive in outdoor environments. That love of the natural world prompted me to study geology and geography as an undergrad. Now, I’m in the UCSB Geography Department studying wildfire weather and ecology. I love connecting the new ecology knowledge that I am learning with how gardens grow and thrive. A big part of the garden also involves building and maintaining projects, which I also really enjoy doing. I’d love to have more community projects where we can work together to make our garden spaces better for everyone. Aug 2020 - Rodent Traps at FSH
Please keep children and ESAs away from the orange ground stakes and traps. Grounds is monitoring them for rodent capture and relocation. May 2020 - Mulch Delivery

He enjoys learning about various local ecosystems and in his free time, enjoys music, art, and reading about food. Spring 2020 - Do Not Feed the Wildlife
Spring 2020 - Fire Season is Here - Take out all green waste
Thank you to everyone who regularly maintains their area free of green waste or overgrowth of weeds. Fire Season is here and any dry grass, twigs, weeds etc. are fuel hazards for high potential of fires. Please continue to take it out. Do not leave them in the area to just sit and dry up. For West Campus garden - there is a green waste dumpster towards the WC parking lot. For Storke, please collect all green waste near your area and dump it at the existing pile near entrance closest to the basketball court and playgrounds. The grounds team at Storke will clear it. REMINDER TO ALL PARENTS:
Per FSH Terms & Conditions, children must be under parental supervision at all times. Please do not allow children to destroy our community shared gardens by picking fruit and leaving it or throwing it around. If food is picked, please take it with you and do not leave it behind. Our grounds staff does their best to maintain the gardens for everyone to enjoy. Kids Garden Grand Opening Recap!
